Christine Walde studied Comparative Literature, Classics and English. After her dissertation on the Ps.-Senecan tragedy Hercules Oetaeus she was working as a researcher at the Sigmund Freud-Institute Frankfurt with the project „Das antike Erbe in der psychoanalytischen Traumforschung Freuds“ (sponsored by the Volkswagen-Stiftung). She published a monograph on dreams and dream interpretation in Classical Antiquity (Antike Traumdeutung und moderne Traumforschung, 2001) and could focus on the study of psychoanalysis. Her “Habilitationsschrift” at the University of Basel (Switzerland) focussed on dream narratives in Greco-Roman poetry (Traumdarstellungen in der griechisch-römischen Dichtung, 2001). She never abandoned dreams and dream interpretation as research topics, but her SNF-Förderungsprofessur, again at the University of Basel, on „Eine menschengemachte Katastrophe als kollektives Trauma. Seine Verarbeitung am Beispiel von Lucans Bellum Civile“ led her on to a combination of literary interpretation and historical psychotraumatology and memory research. Since 2005 she holds the Chair of Classical Philology at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Germany). Currently she is working on Lucan and the reception of Classical Antiquity, and is preparing a monograph on sleep in Classical Antiquity and an interdisciplinary handbook on dream and sleep (Metzler-Verlag), co-edited with Alfred Krovoza.
